dictionary.com states one definition of alive is: adjective (postpositive): 1. (of people, animals, plants, etc) living; having life.
How do we recognize something as being alive, as having life? Is a rock alive? Is a tree alive? Is a bird alive? One criteria might be does it move. Lava moves, so was a rock once alive? Let's add more criteria. Does it breathe? Now we are getting somewhere. A tree breathes. It is alive but may be what we would consider as a "lower life form". Let's add more. Does it make decisions? Now that really opens things up. A bird can fly here, it can fly there, it can make a nest out of this or out of that. So the bird is definitely alive. Now for an even higher criteria. Is it aware that it is alive? René Descartes wrote the philosophical proposition "I think, therefore I am" (Latin: "Cogito ergo sum"). To think you must be aware and have choice in what thoughts to think. In other words, consciousness and free will.
Okay, so we are alive. Now what does that mean? That opens up more questions. What's life? What's death? What's the purpose of it all? That's a fundamental question with a simple answer. To grow up and evolve from fear to Love.
For today, I remember that I am a consciousness with free will that is growing up and evolving from fear to Love. Succinctly ... I AM Alive. I AM That.
