A baby's mind is wide open. Whatever her parents and those people in her environment teach or demonstrate will go right into her consciousness and subconscious without being filtered. Thus she develops beliefs about herself and the world around her. As she grows up, her mental faculties allow her to test and filter what she allows in. She allows in what she feels is right for her and rejects everything else. However, if she starts thinking that she is right about everything and rejects all differing ideas, she has become closed-minded. There's no evolution being in such a state. Alternatively, she could be completely open-minded and allow every idea in. But then she would be a fool with a mix of unintegrated ideas. A balance is needed of open-mindedness and skepticism. Trust your ability to discern. Be open to differing ideas and test them to see if they are useful. If after a while, the idea just does not "fit", discard it. A lot of the times, we automatically discard ideas because of who or where they are coming from, we "judge a book by its cover". Asking who is the messenger of an idea is not the test to apply. The test is, is the idea itself useful.
For today, I remember that I AM Open-Minded (with some skepticism). I AM That.
P.S.: In the past, people believed that the Earth was flat and that the Sun revolved around the Earth. Some people thought otherwise (including 15th century Copernicus and 16th century Galileo) and came up against tremendous resistance from closed-minded people (Galileo was put under house arrest for the rest of his life). Eventually there was a shift to the paradigm that the Earth is round and the Sun is the center of our Solar system. Why did they shift? Because the old model did not fit observations, and the new model more accurately did. The flat Earth model was not completely thrown out once people saw a "bigger picture". It is still useful in the area of surveying property and local maps, but it does not work on large scales such as putting a rocket into orbit. Wherever you are in your understanding, there is always a "bigger picture", there is no end. After the model of Newtonian physics came Special Relativity and Einstein's General Relativity. Then came Quantum Physics and now Tom Campbell's Theory-Of-Everything ("My Big TOE"). If people had been completely closed-minded, we would still be living on a flat Earth.
